President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has asked the Nigerian Senate to confirm Taiwo Oyedele as a minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Tinubu had, on March 3, nominated Oyedele—chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms—as Minister of State for Finance.
If confirmed, Oyedele will succeed Doris Uzoka-Anite, who is expected to move to the Federal Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning as Minister of State, marking her third portfolio in the Tinubu administration.
The request was conveyed in a letter read during Tuesday’s plenary by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
In the letter, Tinubu said the nomination was made in line with Section 147(2) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), which empowers the president to appoint ministers subject to Senate confirmation.
“In compliance with the provisions of Section 147(2) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 as amended, I am pleased to forward to the Senate for confirmation the nomination of Mr Taiwo Oyedele as Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” the letter read.
The president also expressed hope that the Senate would give the nomination prompt consideration.
“While I hope that this request will receive the expeditious consideration of the Senate, please accept, Distinguished Senate President, the assurances of my highest regards,” the letter added.
After reading the correspondence, Akpabio referred the nomination to the Committee of the Whole for further legislative action.
“In line with our practice and considering the urgency, the nomination is hereby referred to the Committee of the Whole for consideration,” Akpabio said.
