Members of the All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS) and the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) have commenced a nationwide protest over the abducted Ogbomoso schoolchildren and tutors.
The national body of the NUT had on Sunday declared an indefinite strike in Oyo state, urging all state chapters of the union to stage solidarity rallies today over the abductees.
In a statement made available to TheCable on Tuesday, Tawo Akuben, ANCOPSS national secretary, said the leadership had directed all school principals across the country to join the protest.
“The pains, psychological and emotional trauma experienced by the abducted is better imagined than felt,” the statement reads.“In view of this, our mother union, the NUT national, has called for a release of the abducted children and teachers.
“Based on the aforementioned, the National President of ANCOPSS, Dr. Robert Ike Okorie has directed via this medium that ANCOPSS State Presidents including FCT Abuja to: as a matter of urgent necessity, mobilize principals in every state capital to participate in solidarity rally with our mother union on Tuesday, 2nd June, 2026.”
While noting that an injury to one is injury to all, ANCOPSS urged its state chapters and members to participate in the exercise “with pictorial evidence and post to the national platform”.
Salient Times understands that the protests have commenced in most parts of the country, while gathering momentum elsewhere.
A video seen by our correspondent showed protesters marching from the Balogun area of Ikeja, Lagos, towards the state secretariat in Alausa.
The demonstrators blocked a section of the road leading to the secretariat while chanting solidarity songs.
Reports also indicate that NUT members have converged on the union secretariat, from where they are expected to proceed to other parts of the state for the demonstration.
The development follows Monday’s protests in Ibadan, Ogbomoso and Abeokuta, over the plight of the abducted victims.
On May 15, about 39 students and seven teachers were abducted across three schools in Oriire LGA.
During the attack, gunmen killed an assistant headmaster and a motorcyclist.
Days later, Michael Oyedokun, one of the abducted teachers, was beheaded by the kidnappers, triggering nationwide outrage.
In separate videos posted on Instagram, Rachael Alamu, principal of Community High School, Esiele, who is among the abductees, said the kidnappers had threatened to kill another victim, urging authorities to urgently negotiate their release.
Seyi Makinde, governor of Oyo, visited families of the victims on Saturday, while a federal delegation led by Femi Gbajabiamila, chief of staff to the president, and Nuhu Ribadu, national security adviser, visited Ogbomoso on Sunday.
President Bola Tinubu has also directed the deployment of a specialised security unit with advanced rescue capabilities to secure the victims’ release.
