Armed Forces Remembrance Day: Collaborate, Support Veterans With Disabilities- Tinubu’s Aide Tells Nigerians

Senior Special Assistant to the President on Disability Matters Hon. Mohammed Abba Isa has called on the Nigerian Armed Forces and partners to collaborate with the office in order to bring the dream to fruition
Hon. Abba Isa stated that Armed Forces Remembrance Day, must pay tribute not only to the sacrifices made by the brave servicemen and women but also on challenges faced by those who have returned with disabilities.
This was contained in a Statement signed by SSA to the President on Disability Matters, on Monday , on the occasion of 2024 Armed Forces Remembrance Day
According to Abba Isa, he explained “The valor displayed by our armed forces is immeasurable, and we owe an immense debt of gratitude to those who have risked life and limb in service to our nation. However, as we honor their courage, we must also acknowledge the unique challenges faced by our veterans with disabilities.”
He said “As the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Disability Matters, I recognize that our veterans with disabilities embody the spirit of resilience and courage, displaying unmatched dedication to defending our beloved country. These heroes have faced challenges most can only imagine, yet they stand tall as symbols of unwavering commitment.
“While we honor their sacrifices, we must acknowledge the unique challenges they face in their daily lives. Many veterans with disabilities confront obstacles in accessing healthcare, rehabilitation, and employment opportunities. It is our duty as a nation to ensure that their sacrifices are met with unwavering support and care.”
According to Abba Isa, noted that the government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is committed to addressing these concerns comprehensively, and recognizing the urgency of addressing these issues, we have devised comprehensive plans to enhance their well-being.
Abba Isa stressing, that the government is committed to expanding rehabilitation programs to ensure that veterans with disabilities receive the best medical care and support. This includes access to state-of-the-art prosthetics, rehabilitation facilities, and mental health services to aid their physical and psychological recovery.
“Secondly, the government is actively working towards fostering an inclusive environment that promotes the full integration of veterans with disabilities into society. This involves initiatives to enhance educational and employment opportunities, enabling them to contribute their skills and experiences to the nation’s development.”
He further disclosed that the one of these initiatives includes the introduction of adaptive sports with the objective of bringing veterans with disabilities back to healing and productivity.
“We will also be seeking collaboration with relevant stakeholders to implement awareness campaigns aimed at changing societal perceptions and dismantling stereotypes associated with disability. By fostering a culture of inclusion, we hope to create a more supportive and understanding society for veterans with disabilities.
“Our commitment extends beyond words, and we are investing in adaptive technologies to enhance the quality of life for veterans with disabilities. By harnessing innovation, we aim to provide assistive devices that empower them to navigate daily challenges and pursue their aspirations.
“To this effect, I call on the authorities of the Nigerian Armed forces and partners to collaborate with the office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Disability Matters to bring this dream to fruition.”
“As we commemorate Armed Forces Remembrance Day, let us reaffirm our collective responsibility to honor and support veterans with disabilities. They deserve more than our gratitude; they deserve our commitment to ensuring they live fulfilling lives after their selfless service to our great nation.”
