Thousands of flights to and from the region have been cancelled, resulting in one of the most significant travel disruptions, which creates uncertainty for teams preparing for continental and international tournaments.
Nigerian Footballers Face Disruption
Several Nigerian professionals based in Qatar have also been affected. Former Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong, Edidiong Udosen, and players in Qatar’s second division have experienced fixture suspensions, interrupted training schedules and uncertainty over contractual incentives tied to match appearances.
Black Queens Stranded in UAE
Players of Ghana’s women’s national team, the Black Queens, are currently stranded in the United Arab Emirates after authorities closed the country’s airspace amid the conflict. Players confirmed they remain safe but are awaiting further instructions as Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Ministry is assessing evacuation plans.
Iran’s World Cup Participation in Doubt
There is uncertainty regarding Iran’s participation in the upcoming FIFA World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada. Iran has qualified, but rising tensions have raised doubts about logistics and diplomatic clearances. FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafstrom has stated that the governing body’s focus remains on ensuring a safe tournament with full participation.
Football Across the Region Suspended
All sporting events in Iran have been cancelled until further notice, including top-flight league matches. The Qatar Football Association has indefinitely postponed domestic competitions, while the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has delayed multiple Asian Champions League fixtures involving clubs from the region.
Quarter-finals in the Asian Champions League Two and the Challenge League have also been pushed back as the AFC prioritises safety and security.
Paralympic and Olympic Sports Affected
The International Paralympic Committee confirmed that athlete arrivals for the Milano Cortina Winter Paralympic Games have been disrupted due to airport closures across the Middle East. Officials are working with organisers to find alternative travel routes.
The World Endurance Championship has postponed its season-opening race in Qatar, while Formula One’s upcoming races in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia remain under review.
Tennis and Athletes Impacted
The ATP Challenger event in Fujairah was cancelled due to a security alert. Russian players Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev have faced travel difficulties en route to Indian Wells, while two-time Olympic medallist P.V. Sindhu withdrew from the All England Open after being stranded in Dubai for several days.
As geopolitical tensions persist, the ripple effects continue to expose the vulnerability of global sport to regional instability, with safety, logistics and participation now central concerns for governing bodies worldwide.
