From Kenechukwu Obiajuru, Yenagoa

Former President of Nigeria, Dr Goodluck Jonathan, Governor Douye Diri, member representing Ogbia Federal Constituency, Chief Mitema Obordor and Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of St Kitts and Nevis, Dr Eruani Azibapu, were among dignitaries that graced the traditional marriage of former Dr Itari Turner, daughter to the Monarch of Oloibiri Kingdom in Bayelsa State, King Amalate Turner at the weekend.

Speaking at the well attended event in Yenagoa, Dr Jonathan urged the newly married Itari and her husband, Mr Chonkea Joseph, to embrace marriage as a sacred covenant built on faith, love and commitment, urging the couple to promote shared spiritual values and mutual understanding at all times.

Drawing from biblical history and contemporary realities, the former President who was accompanied to the ceremony by his wife, Dame Patience Jonathan, said marriage goes beyond social celebration and legal recognition, noting that it carries deep spiritual and cultural significance.

He recalled that the first recorded miracle of Jesus Christ took place at a wedding ceremony, underscoring the importance and sacredness of the marriage institution in society.

Jonathan identified companionship, love, and the reduction of loneliness as key reasons people enter marriage, while also highlighting stability, shared resources, and legal recognition as major benefits.

He said: “Our world has changed, especially in this digital age, and the way elders advise young people must reflect these realities. However, the core values of marriage-commitment, love, and responsibility, remain the same.

“Marriage is not just a contract; it is a covenant. It demands faithfulness, patience, and understanding. When couples walk in the same faith and purpose, it strengthens their bond and reduces conflict. Unity of belief is a strong pillar for a successful home.

“Marriage creates a stable environment for raising children and provides emotional and spiritual support for both partners. It also gives financial and legal structure that strengthens the family unit.”

On his part, the Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri represented by his deputy, Dr Peter Akpe, emphasized the importance of love, tolerance, and mutual respect in building a lasting marital union.

Describing marriage as a lifelong journey, the Bayelsa State Chief Executive congratulated the couple and enjoined them to make forgiveness their watchword

Governor Diri prayed for God’s blessings upon the couple and expressed confidence that their union would contribute positively to family values and societal development.

His words: “Marriage is not just about today’s celebration but a lifelong journey. You must learn to accommodate each other, forgive quickly, and allow love to guide your decisions,”

Speaking as Chairman of the occasion, former Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, Rear Admiral Gboribiogha John-Jonah (rtd), charged the groom to provide responsible leadership in his home and nurture a peaceful family environment.

He noted that challenges are inevitable in marriage and therefore urged the couple to confront difficulties with singleness of purpose rather than division.

According to him, “The husband is the head of the home and must provide leadership. You must make your home a heaven in order to bring out the angel in your wife.

“No marriage is without challenges, but you must handle your differences together. Face your problems as one and not as enemies.”

Other notable personalities at the ceremony included the Member representing Nembe/Brass Federal Constituency at the House of Assembly, Hon. Marie Ebikake, former Chief of Staff to the President, Chief Mike Oghiadomhe, State Chief Judge, Justice Matilda Ayemieye, Commissioners and members of the Bayelsa House of Assembly, Deputy Chief of Staff to the Deputy Governor, Comrade Gowon Toruyouyei, Acting State Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Dr Dennis Otiotio, President of Ijaw National Congress, Prof. Benjamin Okaba and traditional rulers including the Obeniken of Epie Kingdom, King Malla Sasime.
