Kayode Egbetokun has resigned from his position as inspector-general of police following a directive from President Bola Tinubu.
Presidency sources told TheCable that Tinubu instructed Egbetokun to step down on Monday night. He subsequently submitted his resignation letter on Tuesday morning.
On June 19, 2023, Tinubu appointed Egbetokun as IGP to replace Usman Baba. He was confirmed by the police council in October 2023.
As when Egbetokun was appointed, the Police Act 2020 was in operation.
According to section 7 of the act, the person appointed to the office of the IGP shall hold the office for four years.
Egbetokun, who was born on September 4, 1964, was expected to retire on September 4, 2024, upon reaching the mandatory age of 60 — based on civil service rules.
In July 2024, the national assembly hurriedly passed a bill to amend the Police Act 2020 to allow the IGP to remain in office “until the end of the term stipulated in his appointment letter”.
Based on the amended law, the IGP was expected to retire in 2027 after the expiration of his four-year tenure.
The development sparked controversy on whether the tenure extension granted to Egbetokun was appropriate.
Despite the controversy, Egbetokun remained in office not until he was asked to resign.
