The Rivers State Police Command has launched an investigation after gunmen attacked King of the Bangha Kingdom in Khana Local Government Area Local Government Area of the state, His Royal Majesty (HRM) Suanu Timothy Baridam.

The monarch was shot in the leg while returning from an engagement in Okwale community on Sunday, January 25, 2026, according to sources.

The attack occurred between Taabaa Junction and Sogho when armed assailants attempted to stop his vehicle.

The driver reportedly refused to halt, prompting the gunmen to open fire, injuring both the king and his driver.

The monarch is receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital in Port Harcourt, the state capital.

The motive for the shooting has not been confirmed, though initial reports suggested the attackers intended to assassinate the traditional ruler.

According to report, the recent attack is the second known attempt on King Baridam’s life.

Chairman of Khana LGA, Mr Thomas Bariere, condemned the attack and said it was not linked to any gang-related dispute. He described the incident as an attempt to instil fear and disrupt economic activity in the area

Their intention is to cause intimidation and create an atmosphere that looks like there is a crisis in Khana, which could drive away businesses and investors.

We have faced this before, we understand their antics, and we are on top of our game,” Bariere said.

He added that the council would not tolerate attacks on residents and promised that perpetrators would be identified and brought to justice.

The Youth and Environmental Advocacy Centre also called for a comprehensive investigation.

Executive Director Mr Fyneface Dumnamene said the attack was “not only on the King’s person but also an affront to the traditional institution in Rivers State and a threat to the peace of Bangha Kingdom, Khana, Ogoni, and the Niger Delta region.

The group urged the state police and Governor Siminalayi Fubara to ensure the monarch’s security.

The spokesperson of the command, Grace Iringe-Koko confirmed the attack on Monday.

“Yes, I confirm the attack. He sustained gunshot injuries. However, he is responding to treatment, and investigation is ongoing,” the PPRO said.

Observers at the hospital reported that the monarch had a bandage on his right ankle, with traces of blood still visible from the wound.

Authorities have launched a manhunt for the gunmen, with all security formations in the area said to be collaborating to identify and apprehend those responsible.
