World heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, on Monday survived a motor accident that claimed two lives along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State.
The incident occurred at Makun, Sagamu axis of the expressway and involved the boxer’s Lexus Jeep and a stationary truck.
The accident happened around noon and caused temporary panic among commuters.
According to eyewitnesses, the collision left the Lexus Jeep severely damaged, while Joshua sustained injuries but remained conscious.
Officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) quickly arrived at the scene to conduct rescue operations and restore traffic flow.
Confirming the development, the Public Education Officer of the FRSC in Ogun State, Mr. Afolabi Odunsi, said the crash involved five occupants.
“Five people were involved. One injured, two were unhurt while two lost their lives in the crash,” Odunsi stated.
He attributed the crash to excessive speeding and wrongful overtaking, noting that the driver overtook from the right before ramming into the stationary truck.
Odunsi added that Joshua was attended to by his security team and taken to a medical facility for treatment, although his condition was described as stable.
“Anthony Joshua was involved but he only sustained injury and was taken to an undisclosed hospital by the security officers attached to him,” he confirmed.
He also disclosed that the bodies of the deceased had been evacuated and deposited at the morgue.
“Obstructions have been cleared and normal vehicular movement has resumed on that route,” Odunsi further assured motorists.
The Ogun State Police Command also issued a confirmation through its spokesperson, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi.
Babaseyi noted that investigations had commenced to determine full circumstances surrounding the crash.
“The deceased victims have been deposited at Livewell Hospital Morgue, Sagamu, while we proceed with necessary inquiries,” he said.
The police spokesperson reiterated the need for drivers to maintain safety measures and avoid speeding on major highways.
Motorists who witnessed the crash expressed concern over recurring accidents on that stretch of the expressway, calling for stricter enforcement.
Several residents also appealed for improved road signage and better monitoring to prevent further tragedies.
Meanwhile, supporters and sports enthusiasts across Nigeria have expressed relief that Joshua survived and have wished him a quick recovery.
As investigations continue, authorities have urged road users to exercise caution, stressing that safety remains the shared responsibility of all motorists.
