… As Manager recounts ordeal

Following attack on the renowned fuji musician, Abass Akande, popularly known as Obesere, last Friday, in Okitipupa, Ondo state, the Chairman of the council, Hon. Andrew Ogunsakin, on Sunday said three people have been arrested in connection with the attack.

The Chairman who disclosed this in a statement issued and signed by his Press Secretary, Tosin Ayejusunle, condemned the violent attack on the Fuji musician and his band team, describing the incident as unacceptable and contrary to the peaceful values of the council area.

According to him, it was confirmed that Obesere was attacked along with members of his team during a burial ceremony at the Government Field, Okitipupa, saying investigations is ongoing to identify other individuals involved.

Ogunsakin commended security operatives for their swift response, noting that their professionalism helped restore calm and stabilise the situation.

According to the statement, “The Chairman has also initiated moves to meet with Obesere and his management team to address the matter thoroughly and ensure such occurrences do not repeat themselves.

“The engagement aims to rebuild confidence and strengthen security protocols around public events within the local government.”

Ogunsakin reiterated his administration’s commitment to maintaining peace, order, and respect for the rule of law across Okitipupa Local Government, assuring residents and visitors that hooliganism will not be tolerated.

He said, “Further updates are expected as investigations progress and engagements between the council authorities and Obesere’s team continue.

Recounting the experience during the attack, the band Media Manager, Ayonla Obesere Althentic, explained that moments after Obesere concluded his performance, groups of touts descended on the venue.

He explained that, “after Alhaji Abass Akande Obesere (Papa) concluded his performance and while we were preparing to leave the venue, large groups of touts surrounded the area.

“One group converged on my location because I was carrying the bag of money.

“Despite our efforts to leave peacefully, my principal and I were aggressively confronted. They demanded that I hand over the bag; when I refused, a violent struggle ensued.

“During the attack I was beaten and my shoulder was dislocated as a result of the struggle.

“I was also struck with a knife while attempting to get into the car; I cannot confirm a stabbing wound but I sustained several blows and am in significant pain.

“The attackers overpowered me and made away with the bag of money. At the same time, another group continued to manhandle Alhaji Abass Akande Obesere even after he attempted to placate them by giving money.

“I later guided Alhaji into our vehicle and we left the scene to seek safety and medical attention.

“We condemn this criminal and violent behaviour in the strongest terms. Such attacks on performers, their teams, and mourners at a burial ceremony are unacceptable.

“We have reported the incident to the Okitipupa Police Division and we call on local authorities to identify and prosecute those responsible and to take measures to prevent similar incidents at public events.

“We appeal to fans, event organizers, and the public to refrain from violence and to respect the safety of performers and their teams.

“We appreciate the assistance of those who helped us at the scene and the prompt attention of local security personnel and health services. Further updates will be issued as appropriate.

He commended security operatives for their prompt action and their initiated engagement with Obesere’s management team to address the incident comprehensively and prevent a recurrence.

He also called on event organisers, fans, and the public to avoid violence and respect the dignity of artists and their teams.
