The Ogun State Police Command has reassured residents of Ajebo community in Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area that there is no imminent threat of attack, despite a viral social media video alleging that herdsmen were planning to unleash violence on the area.

Following the circulation of the video, the Commissioner of Police, CP Lanre Ogunlowo, deployed the Command’s tactical team—led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations)—to conduct a security assessment of the community.

The operation was carried out in collaboration with the Amotekun Corps, So-Safe Corps, Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC), local hunters, and the Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN).

The joint team undertook a comprehensive intelligence-led sweep in and around the Ajebo axis.

Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Omolola Odutola, confirmed the development in a statement issued in Abeokuta on Friday.

Odutola said operatives discovered that the Fulani settlers in Ajebo were not hostile newcomers but long-standing residents who have lived peacefully within the community.

“Children and women were seen in their temporary shelters, but no arms or suspicious activities were detected. No adult male was present, as the men had travelled to Oyo State for trading activities consistent with their routine economic pattern.

“ A further sweep revealed an extended RUGA settlement that has reportedly existed for more than ten years,” she said.

She added that Oba Rueben Oluwole, the traditional ruler said to have authorised the land allocation to the settlers, has been invited by the police for clarification.

The Baale of Alapako, another community where clusters of Fulani huts were found, has also been summoned for a meeting with the Commissioner of Police.

According to her, the joint security team is maintaining surveillance within the forest area, located about 10km from the main community.

She emphasised that the operation is precautionary, as the settlers were found unarmed and living peacefully.

Odutola urged the public to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information capable of causing panic, assuring residents that proactive intelligence measures remain fully in place to ensure their safety.
