A personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Ondo State was on Thursday stabbed to death by a mentally unstable young man.

The NSCDC official was killed while trying to restrain the mentally deranged man, who had been troubling the Oke Ala community in the Oba Ile area of Akure North Local Government Area of the state.

It was gathered that the mother of the mentally ill man had invited NSCDC officers to apprehend him, as he had been uncontrollable in the community for several years.

An eyewitness explained that two NSCDC officials had apprehended the mentally unstable man with the aim of taking him to a psychiatric facility when he suddenly overpowered one of the officers.

All attempts to calm him failed, and he overpowered the officer, grabbed the officer’s knife, and repeatedly stabbed him before fleeing the scene.

The victim was immediately rushed to the hospital but later died from the injuries sustained in the attack.

The eyewitness recounted: “The boy suddenly became violent. He struggled with the officer, took his knife and stabbed him several times.

“It was shocking because the officer was even armed, yet he could not prevent the attack.”

Confirming the incident, the NSCDC Public Relations Officer in the state, Daniel Aidamenbor, said the officers were attempting to take the young man to a psychiatric hospital when the attack occurred.

He explained that the young man overpowered the officers, grabbed the officer’s knife, and stabbed him repeatedly.

Aidamenbor said the officers’ intervention was intended to protect both the suspect and the community. Further details about the incident remain unclear.
