The Enugu State Government has issued a five-day ultimatum for the removal of abandoned vehicles, makeshift mechanic workshops, and other unauthorised roadside activities obstructing traffic and degrading public infrastructure across the state.
In a joint public notice released on Wednesday, the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure and the Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority (ECTDA) expressed concern over the growing number of derelict and broken-down vehicles littering major and minor roads.
The agencies also decried the conversion of road corridors into informal mechanic workshops where oil spills, fuel leakages, welding, and other unregulated activities are carried out directly on road surfaces.
According to the statement, these practices weaken asphalt, damage road structures, create traffic bottlenecks, pose environmental hazards, and endanger the safety of other road users.
The government warned vehicle owners, mechanics, artisans, and traders occupying road verges, shoulders, and other unauthorised public spaces to vacate immediately. All abandoned or broken-down vehicles and unauthorised roadside operations must be removed within five days of the announcement.
The statement noted that the use of public roads for trading, long-term parking, mechanical repairs, oil changing, or any activity that obstructs traffic is strictly prohibited.
The government announced that from Tuesday, November 25, 2025, a coordinated enforcement exercise will begin, during which all obstructive and improperly stationed vehicles will be towed away. Defaulters will face sanctions including fines, towing and recovery fees, and possible prosecution under relevant state laws.
Mechanics, artisans, and traders were urged to relocate to designated and approved areas to avoid penalties.
The Ministry of Works and Infrastructure and the ECTDA reiterated their commitment to ensuring clean, safe, and motorable roads across Enugu State.
