As Hon. Pamoh, others advocate for action

Bayelsa State House of Assembly has passed a resolution urging the Ministry of Land and Survey and other relevant agencies to regulate arbitrary rent increases in the state, particularly in Yenagoa and other urban centers.
Speaking in favour of the motion, the lawmaker representing Kolokuma/Opokuma Constituency 1, Hon. Pamoh Werinipre, emphasized the need for the government and landlords to take into account the prevailing economic challenges facing citizens, and to accordingly fix house rent and agency fees at affordable rates.
In their separate contributions, the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Michael Ogbere, the Leader, Rt. Hon. Monday-Bubou Obolo and Hon. Omubo Ayonatiminyo all affirmed that since the welfare and security of the people remain the primary responsibility of government, the House is under obligation to step into addressing such distressing situation.
Hon. Barr Tare Porri, who moved the resolution, noted that rent hikes have made it difficult for civil servants and low-income earners to afford decent accommodation, with prices rising from ₦120,000 to ₦200,000 per year to ₦800,000 to ₦1,500,000.
Hon. Living Mitin, Hon. Ben Selekaye Victor and Hon. Daniel Charles said that as representatives of the people, it was imperative for the House to address the issue which has provoked public outcry, noting that, being a predominantly civil service state, the pain is even more.
The House also advocated for a Rent Control and Tenancy Regulation Law and a committee to mediate disputes between landlords and tenants.
In another development, the House considered and approved the Report of its Committee on Women, Children Affairs and Social Development on the Agency for Persons with Disabilities Bill, 2025.
