The Federal Government has nominated Dr. Taoheed Elias as Nigeria’s candidate for a seat at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), reaffirming the country’s commitment to upholding international law and amplifying Africa’s voice in global justice.
Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, made the announcement during a presentation to members of the diplomatic community and Nigerians, describing Dr. Elias as a jurist of “exceptional academic insight, institutional experience, and judicial temperament.”
According to Tuggar, the nomination reflects Nigeria’s belief in multilateralism and the rule of law, especially at a time when global disputes are becoming increasingly complex.
“This candidacy is not about Nigeria alone. It is about ensuring that Africa retains its rightful presence in the global rule of law, maintaining balance, and reaffirming that all regions must share in the custodianship of global justice,” Tuggar said.
He added that Nigeria’s consistent respect for international legal decisions underscores its fidelity to the rule of law.
“Our records speak clearly. Whenever we have appeared before international courts, we have respected and implemented their judgments fully,” the minister stated.
In his remarks, Dr. Taoheed Elias pledged to serve with neutrality, fairness, and integrity if elected to the ICJ.
He outlined three pillars of his candidacy, his academic expertise in international law, two decades of legal experience within the United Nations system, and his prior judicial service.
“What I look forward to is respect for the Court, which is a principal organ of the United Nations, and service rooted in international law and UN principles,” he said.
Dr. Elias, an international lawyer and former ad hoc judge of the ICJ, will serve a nine-year term from 2027 to 2036 if elected.
Nigeria has previously produced three representatives at the ICJ, but the country’s seat has remained vacant since 1994.
The latest nomination, therefore, reflects a renewed effort to strengthen Nigeria’s role in global legal and diplomatic affairs
