President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced seven days of mourning to honour former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died on Sunday.
Tinubu disclosed this in a condolence message on Sunday.
According to him, as a mark of respect to the former leader, he has directed that all national flags fly at half-mast across the country for seven days from Sunday.
“I have directed that all national flags fly at half-staff across the country for seven days from today,” he stated.
He said he has summoned an emergency Federal Executive Council session on Tuesday, dedicated to honouring the late Buhari.
Tinubu added that the federal government will honour the late Buhari with a state funeral.
“As a mark of respect to our former leader, I have directed that all national flags fly at half-staff across the country for seven days from today. I have also summoned an emergency Federal Executive Council session on Tuesday, dedicated to his honour.
The federal government will accord President Buhari full state honours befitting his towering contributions to our country,” the statement read.
Buhari is expected to be buried in Daura, Katsina State, on Monday.
Salient Times report that Buhari’s death was confirmed by his former spokespersons, Garba Shehu and Bashir Ahmed, in separate statements on X on Sunday.
Following Buhari’s death, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to travel to London to convey his remains back to Nigeria.

Former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo has described immediate past President, Gen. Muhammudu Buhari as a patriot that tried his best in the quest to give the country needed progress and development.
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo said he received the news of the death of his former colleague in the military and a former President, Muhammadu Buhari with heavy hearts.
According to him: It is with heavy heart, that I received this afternoon, of the passing of a colleague , a comrade , a cool patriot, General Muhammadu Buhari, who as a soldier , he played his role as a soldier. As an administrator, he played his role as an administrator , as a statesman, he played his role as a statesman, of course.
“At a time like this , we need the totality, of the experience and what I may call statesmanship of all those who have had opportunities to run the affairs of this country to get us out of the situation we are in , he will be surely missed. May his soul rest in perfect peace,” Obasanjo stated.
Aregbesola, Malami, Natasha, Shehu Sani pen tribute to Buhari
Nigerian leaders from both the opposition and the ruling party have continued to pay tribute following the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
Salient Times report that President Buhari died on Sunday, July 13, 2025, in London, following a prolonged illness.
The sad development was confirmed in a statement by President Bola Tinubu’s media aide, Bayo Onanuga.
Onanuga also confirmed that President Tinubu had directed his deputy, Kashim Shettima, to proceed immediately to the United Kingdom to accompany the remains back to Nigeria.
Buhari’s media aide, Garba Shehu, also confirmed the death in a terse statement.
Reacting to the news, former Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, described Buhari as “a leader who served Nigeria with deep conviction and unwavering principle. His commitment to integrity and national unity defined his public service.”
Aregbesola said further, “Nigeria has lost a statesman who believed deeply in our potential as one nation. We have gained the enduring example of a leader who remained true to his values.
“May Allah forgive him, accept his service, and grant him Aljannatul Firdaus. Our prayers are with his family and all Nigerians in this moment of reflection.”
Similarly, the former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, described Buhari as “father, mentor, and a towering figure whose life was defined by service, sacrifice, and unwavering integrity.”
“President Buhari was a man of deep conviction and moral clarity. His leadership inspired discipline, national pride, and a renewed commitment to public accountability.
“I was privileged to work closely with him and to draw from his well of wisdom, courage, and steadfastness in the face of adversity.
“He mentored with quiet strength and led by example. His legacy, of transparency, patriotism, and uncompromising honesty, will continue to shape our national conscience for years to come.
“Nigeria has lost a rare gem. I have lost a father and mentor.
“May Almighty Allah, in His infinite mercy, forgive his shortcomings, reward his noble deeds, and grant him Aljannatul Firdaus,” he said.
Also mourning the late president, the Senator representing Kogi Central, Natasha H. Akpoti-Uduaghan, wrote in a post on her Facebook page, “May Allah accept the soul of President Muhammadu Buhari in Aljannatul Firdaus, Amen.”
Former federal lawmaker, Shehu Sani, also offered prayers, writing, “May Allah forgive his soul and grant him Aljanna firdausi, Amin.”
