A man died after setting himself, his partner, and their two-year-old toddler on fire during an argument in Leslie, Mpumalanga, South Africa.

Police reported that the 30-year-old suspect, identified as John Masuku, allegedly poured petrol over himself and the woman, who was holding the child, before igniting the fuel.

The incident reportedly followed accusations of infidelity made by Masuku during a domestic dispute at their home. Emergency services were called, and all three were taken to hospital.

Due to the severity of her injuries, the toddler was transferred to a specialized medical facility. Masuku died on arrival at the hospital.

Authorities have opened an investigation into an attempted murder case. The mother and child remain in hospital, recovering.

Provincial police commissioner Maj-Gen Zeph Mkhwanazi condemned the incident, urging people to seek peaceful solutions to domestic conflicts instead of resorting to violence.

“This incident is deeply disturbing and highlights the need for peaceful conflict resolution. Violence is never the answer, there are resources and professionals available to help those in distress,” he said.
