The national economic council (NEC) has given Kwara, Kebbi, and Adamawa one week to submit their reports on the creation of state police.

Douye Diri, governor of Bayelsa, announced the deadline on Thursday while briefing State House correspondents after the NEC meeting presided over by Vice-President Kashim Shettima.

Diri said the council would take “appropriate decisions” if the states failed to present their reports within the given timeframe.

On February 15, the federal government constituted a committee to explore the creation of state police in the country.

Mohammed Idris, minister of information, said the president and governors have agreed on modalities for the creation of state police.

The minister added that a series of meetings would take place to determine the workability of a decentralised police force.

In March, NEC said 20 states were yet to send in reports on the establishment of state police.

On September 4, NEC threatened to impose decisions on states failing to submit the reports on state police
