Women Urged To Aspire For Higher Political, Professional Positions

A call has gone to Nigerian women to take up career profession and always aspire for higher political and industrial offices .

The Ogun State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Hon. Motunrayo Adijat Adeleye made the call while playing host to executives and members of a non governmental Organization, ‘100 Women Lobby Group” who were on an advocacy visit to her office inOke mosan Abeokuta.

According to the Commissioner, women should learn political skills and participate in it, admonishing them to take advantage of the prevailing opportunities in the country to acquire the necessary skills and training to position themselves for greater national assignments.

She indicated that the successes already chalked up by women in various leadership positions in both private and public institutions “must be a source of inspiration to all of us to aspire for greater roles

Hon Adijat Motunrayo Adeleye cautioned women against relegating themselves to the back burner, urging them to start clamouring for the higher position in politics and other human endeavors.

She further encouraged women to be humble and have the interest of the masses at heart, reiterating that they are not in the position in order to benefit themselves alone.

She also encouraged women to always give room for support of their fellow women and not against them. “Women should give opportunity for other women to be in position.

She thereafter added that competent women should be considered for positions. “While encouraging women to support the movement for equity.

The Commissioner promised a fast track process for women to access loans meant for women, while advocating that a road map should be designed by Organisation for it to achieve its aim

Earlier, while speaking on the purpose of the visit, Professor Olubunmi Ashimolowo, who is the Ogun State Coordinator of ‘100 Women Lobby” Group spoke on the reasons for the visit which centers on the approach given to the 5 percent gender Bill and its effects on women leaders in the country.

Professor Ashimolowo who thanked the commissioner for her total support for women emancipation urged the Commissioner not to relent in her efforts at ensuring that women occupied the highest political position in the State.

She said the visit centers on the approach given to the 5 percent gender Bill, effects of women leaders in the country. the consideration of women loan, the appointment of women at higher political level and seek support for women who are contesting for political offices in the states.

She highlighted the five gender bills Nigerian women advocated for which include, Bill for Special Seats for Women in the Legislature, Bill for Affirmative Action in Party Administration and Leadership, Bill for Citizenship Rights for Foreign-Born Husbands of Nigerian Women.

Others are Bill for 35% Affirmative Action in Political Party Leadership and Appointments and Bill for Gender-Inclusive Opportunities in Governance and Employment.
