2024 International Day Of Peace: Gateway Aviary Association Advocates For Peace In Nigeria

In commemoration of the 2024 International Day Of Peace, an Internation­al Non-Governmental Organisa­tion (NGO), under the aegis of Aviary Association Worldwide, Gateway chapter has raised awareness through intensified advocacy on the need for all to embrace peace as a panacea for unity and progress.

The group called on all Nige­rians regardless of ethnicity and religion to shun all divisive ten­dencies capable of jeopardising the nation’s quest for an egal­itarian, just, and united society where all forms of segregation or abuse of human rights are not allowed to thrive.

The Chairman, Gateway chap­ter of Aviary Society, Olusegun Oyebola while speaking during the occasion, called on the government and the governed to shun all issues that can promote conflict and promote the presence of justice, equality, and compassion.

Speaking on this year’s theme, “Cultivating A Culture Of Peace” Aviary Gateway Chairman said This year’s theme “is about creating environments where every individual, especially the most vulnerable among us, can thrive and reach their full potential.

“As we commemorate this day, let us remember that peace begins with every one of us.

“It begins with our actions, our words, and our willingness to extend kindness and support to those in need. By coming together today, we are not only celebrating peace but also actively contributing to its realization.

He said the United Nations General Assembly identified eight action areas:

  1. Fostering a culture of peace through education.
  2. Promoting sustainable economic and social development.
  3. Promoting respect for all human rights.
  4. Ensuring equality between women and men.
  5. Fostering democratic participation.
  6. Advancing understanding, tolerance and solidarity.
  7. Supporting participatory communication and the free flow of information and knowledge.
  8. Promoting international peace and security.

“The Global Movement for the Culture of Peace is a partnership of groups from civil society that have banded together to promote a culture of peace. Part of the work is to tell a new story.

Let us all leave here today inspired to continue our efforts in building a more peaceful and just world.

*Let us remember that peace begins with us, in our homes, our neighbourhoods, and our workplaces and to also commit to being ambassadors of peace.

“Let us strive to resolve conflicts with empathy, celebrate our differences, and work together towards a more harmonious world.

Earlier during the day, the group moves around major streets in Abeokuta metropolis, calling on residents to live in Peace with each other

Meanwhile, as part of the activities to mark the 7th year anniversary of Aviary Association Worldwide, Gateway chapter, the Association visited Stella Obasanjo Children’s Home, Ibara Abeokuta where some foodstuffs and toiletries were donated to the home.

Speaking during the visit, Mr Olusegun Oyebola State President Gateway Aviary said the visit is a testament to the commitment of the Association to fostering a world where every child feels valued, loved, and supported.

“The children here reminded us of the resilience of the human spirit and the boundless potential that lies within each of us.

The Association appreciated the staff and volunteers of the Motherless Babies Home for their unwavering dedication and the love they provide to the children.

“Your work is a beacon of hope and a powerful reminder of the impact that compassion and care can have on the lives of others.

“To the children, know that you are not alone.

“You are surrounded by a community that cares deeply for you and believes in your potential.

“Your dreams are valid, and your future is bright.

“As we commemorate a day like this which happens to be our 7th year Anniversary and also the International day of peace, we wish to extend a hand of love and charity to this home by providing these items.

“As we commemorate the day, let us recommit ourselves to providing support, care, and opportunities for these vulnerable children.

“Empathy, education, and initiatives aimed at ensuring their well-being are crucial steps in creating a world where orphans can find hope, healing, and a brighter future despite the hardships they have endured.
