Group Writes Speaker Over Alleged Marginalisation of Members In Kebbi State Commission for Persons Living with Disabilities

A group of people with disabilities have written to the Speaker, Kebbi State House of Assembly on the marginalisation of the The Deaf, Persons affected by leprosy, persons with albinism and blinds into the newly created Kebbi State Commission for Persons Living with Disabilities.

In the letter, a copy which was sent to Salient Times, and addressed to the Speaker, with the title “Complaint over unfair discrimination and marginalization on appointment into Kebbi State Persons With Disabilities Commission, expresses their concern and disappointment over the recent unfair appointment into the Disability Commission in Kebbi State.

“We are compelled to bring to your attention the following grievances:

  1. During the first appointment of the five (5) SSAs, not a single person from the Deaf, persons affected by leprosy, persons with albinism and blinds, clusters was appointed, while all the appointees were from the physically challenged cluster.

“In the second appointment of the Governing Board members of the commission, all the appointees are again from the physically challenged cluster, leaving the Deaf, persons affected by leprosy, persons with albinism and blinds , clusters unrepresented.

The group said “this unfair representation is a clear violation of the rights of the Deafs , persons affected by leprosy, persons with albinism and blinds communities as enchrined into Disability commission act.

“We demand equal representation and opportunities in Kebbi State Disability Commission.

“We urge you (Hon.Speaker) to take immediate action to address this injustice, marginalization and discrimination to ensure that the appointments are reverse or to include other clusters in a fair and inclusive manner.

Salient Times report that Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State recently established the Kebbi State Commission for Persons Living with Disabilities, an initiative that prioritizes disability rights and inclusion.

The move aims to improve the lives of people with disabilities by protecting their rights, promoting economic and educational opportunities, and ensuring social inclusion.
