Seven people have been declared missing after a torrential rainfall in Niger state.
Besides those declared missing, no fewer than 89 houses were also said to have been submerged while hectares of farmlands were also washed away after the rains.
The incident occurred in some communities in two local government areas of Mashegu and Magama yesterday.
Our Correspondent gathered that the rainfall lasted for almost 10 hours which eventually led to severe flooding.
Niger State Emergency Management Agency, (NSEMA) confirmed the development adding that local divers in the affected areas are still on a rescue operation.
” The rainfall was severe and lasted for about 10 hours on Friday and search and rescue operations are still on in the affected communities”
“Communities affected are the environs of Sabon pegi in Mashegu Local government and Nassarawa community of Magama Local government” the statement added.
The Agency has therefore renewed its appeal to people in the river banks to move to the uplands because more rainfall is expected and could cause more flood.
It would be recalled that the National Emergency Management Agency had listed Niger state as one of the states to be affected by flood this year listing 17 out of the 25 local governments in the state to be affected
