Kaduna State governor, Uba Sani, has said the recent nationwide protest in Nigeria was far from agitation against hunger, saying some politicians funded it to effect regime change.
Salient Times recalls that Nigerians had between August 1 and 10, embarked on what was tagged the “EndBadGovernanceinNigeria” protest, to condemn hunger and economic hardship in the country.
Speaking in an exclusive interview aired on TVC and monitored by Salient Times, Governor Sani alleged that over N60 billion was spent by some politicians to undermine Nigeria’s democracy through the protest.
The Governor decried the violence and destruction that was unleashed during the protest.
His words: “Over a week ago, I said that from our little investigation in Kaduna, we were able to identify some politicians who were involved by giving those children money because they eventually confessed to the security agencies.
“Yes, over N60 billion. Even from the report of the NSA, close to $36 million has now been frozen in cryptocurrency. That is what is happening at the moment. That is a fact, and whether we like it or not, you don’t have to be in government, with the ruling party, or the opposition party. As long as you believe in democracy, we must fight for it.
“At the Council of State meeting, the National Security Adviser made it clear that an investigation is ongoing. Both the NSA and the government now know the identities of most of them, and of course, there’s also the involvement of some foreign countries.
“I will not mention that for now because the NSA will be the one to say that, but I can tell you he made it clear to all of us. We may not mention all of them because there may be more as we are sitting here, as investigations are ongoing.
“But it’s sad because the impression given to everyone is that the protest was about hunger. Everyone who lives in this country knows we are facing a lot of economic crises. Certainly, Nigeria is not immune to that crisis because it is a global economic crisis.
“It happened in the UK. In America, it is the same. We have seen it in virtually every country around the world. We see it every day. But there’s a way to handle this issue, and I agree that all of us in government, even those outside of government within the business community, must come together to address this problem. Most of us have only been in government for about 14 months, and the President is just 14 months into his term. We inherited a very bad economy. You don’t need to go to school to know the economy was really bad.”
