In response to security agencies’ warnings about impending protests across the nation, the National Orientation Agency (NOA) has activated its civil intelligence network.
The agency has instructed its 812 offices nationwide to identify potential hotspots and individuals involved in the planned demonstrations.
This move follows a report from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which indicated that certain individuals, particularly those under investigation by the commission, are mobilizing youths, including schoolchildren, to stage a nationwide protest against the government.
NOA Director General, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, has urged parents and concerned citizens to dissuade their wards from participating in the planned protests.
He emphasized that the protest organizers aim to destabilize the country and disrupt ongoing investigations into their illicit activities.
Issa-Onilu directed the agency’s 4,000 staff members to support security agencies in preventing any breakdown of law and order.
He assured that the government would continue to provide avenues for citizens to express their feedback on government policies, programs, and activities.
“A group has been recruiting young Nigerians, including students, through social media to protest against the EFCC’s operational activities, particularly in enforcing cybercrime laws,” Issa-Onilu stated.
The NOA Director General reiterated that while the government respects the citizens’ right to protest, there is evidence that corrupt elements under investigation or prosecution are behind this plot.
These elements aim to exploit the protest to threaten national peace and security.
The NOA urges Nigerians to report any suspicious movements or activities to the nearest EFCC office or law enforcement agency.
