The Benue State Government says the anti-open grazing law remains in force in the state.

Salient Times reports that the law, which prohibited open grazing in the state, was enacted during the administration of former Governor Samuel Ortom.

This was disclosed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Sir Tersoo Kula, while reacting to a letter of appreciation to the government purportedly written by the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria.

Kula stressed that grazing should only take place in ranches in Benue State.

He warned that all forms of attacks on farming communities by armed herders must cease immediately.

Kula said the Benue State Government has no intention of reviewing the law, hence it will be diversionary and criminal for proponents or authors of the said publication to wish to approach the government for a review at this point.

He said if the state wishes to review the prohibition of open grazing, it will not be done by or through groups intimidating or making lawless publications.

According to Kula, the group responsible for unleashing criminal gangs on the people of Benue has never shown remorse.

He said by issuing such a statement, Miyetti Allah seems to be celebrating the killings in numerous communities.

Kula added that Governor Hyacinth Alia commends the efforts and the resolve of security agencies in restoring peace and normalcy to affected communities.

He urged all citizens to support the full implementation of the law against open grazing.
