Female banker commits suicide in Lagos over ‘hardship’
Amarachi Ugochukwu, a marketing employee of a bank in Ikorodu, Lagos, has committed suicide due to “economic hardship”.
The 32-year-old lady was said to have ingested a poisonous substance within the bank premises on Monday.
It was gathered that Ugochukwu made her way into the bank’s restroom around 1 pm, wherein she drank from a bottle of sniper.
An X user identified as Just Society also shared photos of the deceased, the insecticide she ingested, and the note that she left behind.
In the note, Ugochukwu said she decided to end it all because “nothing is working in my life”.
The bank staff, in the note, blamed the “economic hardship of the country”, adding that she could “no longer bear the pain”.
She also apologised to her parents and other members of her family.
“Nothing is working in my life. My figures are low. My brain is clogged up. The economy is getting harder,” Ugochukwu wrote.
“My decisions are wrong. My mind is messed up. The future doesn’t seem bright at all. I see extreme hardship. I can’t bear the pain anymore.
“I am sorry mum, I am sorry dad, I am sorry Nene, Okwe, Toto, Nazor, Chuchu, Ifunanya. Dear Lord, have mercy on me!”
It was gathered the bank’s manager had reported the matter to the police.
As of the time of this report, Benjamin Hundeyin, the spokesperson of the Lagos state police, had yet to release a statement on the incident.
ECONOMIC HARDSHIP IN NIGERIA
In the past years, Nigeria has grappled with economic hardships occasioned by soaring inflation.
The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) last year reported that millions of Nigerians were now struggling to afford three square meals.
The report — released in October — showed that the prices of food items have skyrocketed, leaving many people unable to afford staple foods.
More worrisome is the depreciation of the nation’s currency naira against the US dollar in the foreign exchange market — coupled with the rise in the price of fuel.
