The Headfort Foundation, Prison Reform Initiative has taken to its X handle: @HeadfortF, to share the success story of the release of a prison inmate identified as Jonah.

Jonah was arrested in 2016 at his friend’s naming ceremony and was charged with three other guys thereafter.

They were charged for conspiracy to commit armed robbery.

However, while the three guys were accused of five additional counts of armed robbery, the court granted Jonah bail, and his mother hired a lawyer who took a sum of N180,000 and disappeared.

Headfort Foundation narrated: “In 2017, DPP advice came out and stated that he had no case to answer and the court made a pronouncement that he should be released.

“On the day the order was made, Jonah was not produced from prison and he had no lawyer who could follow up with the execution of the court order.

“Sadly, Jonah remained in prison for four extra years.

“We met him in court in 2021 and took his brief.

“From his story, something was not adding up so our lawyer went to the court to search for his file and she found out that he had been released in 2017 but remains in custody.

“We begin the process of getting him another date in court and ensuring that the order of the court was carried out.

“Jonah finally regained his freedom in 2021.

“There are many more people in prison who have no business being there at all.

“Kindly support this cause so we can ensure justice is done in the 367 cases we are currently handling.”
