Ogun State Local Government Service Commission has reiterated its commitment to training and retraining its workforce to render unfettered and productive services at the grassroots.

The Chairman of the Commission, Ms. Olubunkola Onabanjo stated this at “A day short-course and update meeting” for Accountants in the Local Governments, held at “Crescent Muslim Professionals’ Hall, Leme, Abeokuta”.

Ms. Onabanjo said the short-course meeting was put together to further reawaken the participants’ consciousness to effectively and efficiently discharge their assigned duties as depicted in the mission statement of the Local Government Service Commission.

She said, “as representatives of the Local Government Service Commission, the onus is on them to be diligent, disciplined, ethically acculturated and exhibit professionalism in the
discharge of your duties”.

Onabanjo also stated that, the theme of the meeting, “Effective and Efficient Accounting System in the Local Government” is geared towards the proficient rendering of statutory functions and roles of the local governments efficiently and effectively to meet the yearnings and aspirations of the masses.

According to her, “Local Governments being the closest tier of government to the people has a lot of responsibilities such as, mobilizing resources, promoting social/economic improvement and development, as well as national unity. The Local Governments formulate policies that have significant effects on the livelihood of the masses, revolving round revenue generation, budgeting,
development, planning, provision of services and community mobilization”.

She state further that, all the aforementioned functions of local governments are crucial to ensuring the overall growth and development of our respective areas. To discharge these functions, concerted efforts of effective and efficient financial management
are essential.

She therefore added that “It is important for government agencies to accurately give reports of their finances, because they hold public funds in trust. Therefore, they are accountable to give
details of how these funds are being expended for the overall growth and
development of their domains.

To do this effectively “It is time to evolve from the old ways of doing things to ways and standards that reflect global best practices”.

The Chairman opined that “an efficient accounting system can be achieved through the pursuit of excellent performance. It however requires determination and self-discipline on the part of all and sundry, i.e. top, middle and low-level members of staff”

Ms. Onabanjo emphasized that, “through an efficient accounting system, we can successfully execute projects and deliver
quality services at the local level. In a similar vein, effective use of available resources is about financial alertness and judicious expenditure to meet the needs of the populace, stating that, effective and efficient accounting system aimed at ensuring adherence to
stipulations in the Financial Memorandum, International Public Sector Accounting Standard (IPSAS) and other standard accounting techniques, while making transparency, probity, accountability and control mechanism amongst others, our watch words”.

In his own speech, the Permanent Secretary, Local Government Service Commission, Dr. Adeolu Oluseun Olufowobi exploited the medium to congratulate Dr. Olusesan Abolaji Fagbayi, Full-time Commissioner III in the Commission, on his recent appointment as a “Cabinet Commissioner designate” by the Governor of Ogun State, Prince Dapo Abiodun CON. He charged all the Accountants in the Ogun State Local Government Service, that it is time to evolve from the Old ways of doing things to ways and standards that reflect global best practices.

The P.S, went further saying, “You need to be impacted with the new policies to the financial memorandum of the Local Governments. That is why we brought in experts who had operated in the Ogun State Local Government Service, to tutor you so that you can acquire more experience in addition to what you already have”.

Responding on behalf of the participants, Mr. Wale Bello thanked the Commission for counting them worthy for the workgroup meeting.

He promised, on behalf of his colleagues to be good “Ambassadors” of the Ogun State Local Government Service.

He then requested for more of this gesture on behalf of the Accountants.
