The Coalition of Councillorship Candidates for Grassroots Governance in Rivers has berated the Rivers house of assembly for kick-starting impeachment proceedings against Siminalayi Fubara, governor of the state.

On Thursday, the assembly commenced the proceedings, accusing the governor and Ngozi Odu, his deputy, of gross misconduct.

The legislators also accused the governor of spending without approval.

In a press statement issued in Port Harcourt and signed by Akwu Jonathan, its chairman, on Wednesday, the coalition described the process as “lawless”, “morally bankrupt”, and “politically reckless”.

The group accused the assembly of abusing its powers to subvert the will of the people amid the ongoing political crisis in the state.

The coalition described the impeachment moves as a “calculated plot to hijack governance through legislative brigandage” and a betrayal of public trust.

The group said the assembly lacks the mandate to proceed and urged an immediate halt to the process.

“Should the Assembly proceed further down this unlawful path, the Coalition of Councillorship Candidates for Grassroots Governance will activate a comprehensive recall process against complicit members of the Rivers State House of Assembly across all constituencies,” the statement reads.

“We are prepared to mobilize ward by ward, street by street, and community by community to reclaim the people’s mandate and expose those who have chosen betrayal over representation.”
