The Edo State Security Corps (ESSC) has arrested a 21-year-old man, ThankGod Destiny, for the alleged abduction of a four-year-old boy at Ikpoba Hill, Benin, Edo State.

The Deputy Corps Commander (Operations) of the ESSC, Richard Balogun, disclosed this to journalists in Benin on Thursday, confirming that the suspect has since been handed over to the Police for further investigation and possible prosecution.

Balogun said the incident occurred on January 4, 2026, when a woman reportedly stepped out with her young son at Ikpoba Hill, adding that moments later, the child suddenly disappeared from her sight, triggering panic and a search.

According to the ESSC, the suspect allegedly took the child and hurriedly boarded a commercial bus heading towards King’s Square, Benin.

“Suspicion arose when the bus driver noticed a clear lack of resemblance between the child and the man.

“The driver questioned the suspect about his relationship with the boy. He first claimed the child was ill and that he was taking him to the hospital,” Balogun explained.

However, the suspect reportedly gave a different explanation when questioned by a female passenger, telling her he was taking the child to buy a pair of shoes.

The conflicting accounts was said to have immediately raised alarm among passengers.

The alarm reportedly attracted operatives of the Edo State Security Corps who were on routine patrol in the area.

The suspect was promptly apprehended, while the four-year-old boy was rescued unharmed.

Balogun confirmed that the child has since been reunited with his family, bringing relief to residents of the area.

He reiterated the Corps’ commitment to safeguarding lives and property across the state.

“The Edo State Security Corps will continue to intensify its patrols and remain vigilant in tracking down criminal elements,” he assured.

The arrest has been widely commended by residents, who praised the alertness of the bus driver, the passenger, and the swift response of the ESSC operatives.
