The 2027 governorship race in Ogun State is gaining momentum as two political parties have approached the Chief Promoter of the Alternative Movement, Otunba Segun Showunmi, with offers to contest on their platforms.

Less than two weeks after the Labour Party (LP) leadership in Ogun State reportedly offered to hand him its governorship ticket, the Action Democratic Party (ADP) on Monday visited Showunmi at his residence in Ibara Housing Estate, Abeokuta, to extend a similar invitation.

Speaking during the visit, the State Chairperson of ADP, Yeye Olufunke Olarenwaju, said the party considered Showunmi a credible politician with the grassroots appeal needed to contest and win the 2027 governorship election.

“We want him to come and contest under ADP. He is a credible politician and a grassroots mobiliser. We find him worthy of flying our flag in the next election, and that is why we are here to invite him,” she said.

Showunmi, a former governorship aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), appreciated the gesture and said he would consult widely before reaching a decision, adding that ADP remained a party he held in high esteem.

“ADP, you’re mine and I’m yours,” he told the delegation.

Responding to journalists on his likely destination, Showunmi said he would consider stability, organisation, and acceptability before committing to any platform. He added that he would not rule out working with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) if the opportunity arose.

“What I expect will happen is that, at some point, we will look at which party is the most stable, the most acceptable, and the most organised. Then we will run,” he said.

Showunmi further hinted at his openness to being adopted by the APC, saying, “If the President wants to do it well, he will tell the people in the APC that Showunmi has paid his dues and that it is his time.

So, if the APC wants to adopt me, I am available to be adopted.”

With multiple parties showing interest, political observers say Showunmi’s next move may influence realignments ahead of the 2027 race.
