The Labour Party in Ogun State has suffered a major setback following the resignation of one of its prominent figures, Hon. Olufemi Thomas Afolabi, the party’s 2024 chairmanship candidate for Obafemi Owode Local Government.

Afolabi confirmed his exit in a formal letter addressed to the State Chairman of the Labour Party and copied to both the ward and local government leadership. He explained that the decision came after extensive personal reflection and consultations regarding his political future.

In the letter, Afolabi stated that his resignation was guided by a reassessment of his political direction and long-term aspirations. “After carefully evaluating my political direction, personal convictions, and continued commitment to service, I have concluded that it is necessary to pursue my aspirations through a different path that aligns more closely with my principles, objectives, and long-term vision for effective service delivery to the people of Obafemi Owode LGA,” he wrote.

He expressed appreciation for the support he received from the party’s structures at all levels, stressing that his departure was not borne out of animosity. Rather, he described it as a strategic and conscientious decision taken in good faith.

Afolabi also requested that his name be removed from all Labour Party registers and official records. He wished the party well in its future endeavours.

Although he has not announced his next political move, his resignation has begun generating reactions among party members and observers within the state’s political circle.

More developments are expected as stakeholders continue to respond to his exit.
