The last surviving wife of late former President Shehu Shagari, Hajiya Sutura Shehu Shagari, is dead.
Hajiya Sutura’s death was announced in a statement by Capt. Muhammad Bala Shagari. Rtd. Sarkin Mafaran Shagari on Monday evening.
“INNALILLAHI WA INNAILAIHI RAJIUN,
“With deep sorrow, we announce the passing of Hajiya Sutura Shehu Shagari, the last surviving wife of the former President Alhaji Shehu Usman Aliyu Shagari, GCFR, Turakin Sokoto.
“Hajiya Sutura passed away today at approximately 3:00 PM at the age of 89 after prolonged illness.
“She was an embodiment of grace, humility, and quiet strength, a devoted mother, grandmother, and matriarch who lived a life defined by dignity and compassion.
“Her loss is deeply felt by the
Shagari family, her loved ones.
“Further details and funeral arrangements will be communicated in due course.
Late Shagari was the first democratically elected Nigerian President after the transfer of power by the military regime of former Head of State, General Olusegun Obasanjo (rtd) – leading to the rise of the Second Republic.
He was in office between October 1979 and December 1983, before he was overthrown by the Coup d’etat of that year.
