….Convenes meeting with past leaders – Sule Lamido tells Tinubu
President Bola Tinubu is expected to meet with his United States counterpart, Donald Trump, over the recent claims of Christian genocide in Nigeria.
Disclosing this in a statement on X, the Special Adviser to the President on Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala, said the meeting would happen “in the coming days.”
Bwala stressed the commitment of both leaders to combating insurgency and terrorism, saying Trump has supported Nigeria by authorising arms sales, which the President has effectively utilised in the fight against terrorism, yielding significant results.
“President Trump has assisted Nigeria a lot by authorising the sale of arms to Nigeria, and President Tinubu has adequately utilised the opportunity in the fight against terrorism, for which we have massive results to show,” Bwala said.
He explained that differences in perception regarding whether terrorists in Nigeria target only Christians or people of all faiths would be discussed during the meeting, which could be held either at the State House in Abuja or the White House in Washington.
“Both President Bola Tinubu and President Donald Trump have shared interests in the fight against insurgency and all forms of terrorism against humanity,” he said.
“As for the differences as to whether terrorists in Nigeria target only Christians or in fact all faiths and no faiths, the differences, if they exist, would be discussed and resolved by the two leaders when they meet in the coming days, either in the State House or White House.”
This comes a day after Trump threatened to carry out attacks in Nigeria in response to purported anti-Christian violence, saying he instructed the recently renamed Department of War to “prepare for possible action”.
In a social media post on Saturday, Trump said the United States would immediately cut off all assistance to the African country “if the Nigerian Government continues to allow the killing of Christians”.
The US “may very well go into that now disgraced country, ‘guns-a-blazing,’ to completely wipe out the Islamic Terrorists who are committing these horrible atrocities”, Trump added, without specifying which groups or alleged “atrocities” he was referring to.
“I am hereby instructing our Department of War to prepare for possible action. If we attack, it will be fast, vicious, and sweet, just like the terrorist thugs attack our CHERISHED Christians! WARNING: THE NIGERIAN GOVERNMENT BETTER MOVE FAST!” he wrote.
Trump had earlier announced that Nigeria would be added to the Department of State’s list of “Countries of Particular Concern”, which is set up to monitor religious persecution around the world.

Meanwhile, Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to President Bola Tinubu, says the Nigerian leader was “well ahead of the orchestrated game unfolding in America” following renewed U.S. pressure over alleged persecution of Christians in Nigeria.
Onanuga’s comment came days after U.S. President Donald Trump redesignated Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC) and threatened to halt all aid to the country.
Trump also threatened that the United States “may very well go into that now disgraced country guns-a-blazing, to completely wipe out the Islamic terrorists killing Christians.”

Reacting in a post via his X handle on Sunday, Onanuga said President Tinubu had anticipated the growing international attention on Nigeria’s security situation and had already issued strong directives to the nation’s service chiefs.
“President Bola Tinubu was well ahead of the orchestrated game unfolding in America as he told the new service chiefs on Thursday what Nigerians expect of them. No more excuses, he said. Nigerians want results,” Onanuga wrote.
He shared an excerpt from Tinubu’s address to the military chiefs, in which the President called for decisive and innovative action against emerging security threats across the country.
“Security threats are constantly evolving, constantly mutating. Of grave concern to our administration is the recent emergence of new armed groups in the North-Central, North-West, and parts of the South. We must not allow these new threats to fester. We must be decisive and proactive. Let us smash the new snakes right in the head,” Tinubu said in the excerpt.
The President further urged the military to deploy technology and innovation in tackling insurgency, vowing to provide full support to ensure results.
His remarks come amid growing criticism from right-wing U.S. lawmakers, led by Senator Ted Cruz, who claim that Christians in Nigeria face systematic persecution.
In October, Cruz introduced the Nigeria Religious Freedom Accountability Act of 2025, a bill seeking to sanction Nigerian officials accused of enabling “mass murder of Christians.”
Sule Lamido urges Tinubu to convene meeting with past leaders
Former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido, has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to immediately convene a meeting with all past Nigerian leaders to discuss and address the recent threat issued by United States President, Donald Trump, against Nigeria.
Lamido, in a statement posted on his official Facebook page, described the invasion threat as “very ominous,” warning that its consequences could be dire if not properly handled.
He said, “The threat of war on Nigeria from President Trump of the United States of America, under whatever guise, is very ominous. The consequences of such action cannot be imagined.”
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain called for unity among Nigerians, stressing that this is the time for all citizens, regardless of creed or background, to rally around the nation’s sovereignty.
“It is now time for all Nigerians of all creed to unite around our sovereignty. President Tinubu, on his part, must swallow his pride and invite all our past leaders for a closed-door meeting to fully discuss and find a way around this dangerous development,” Lamido stated.
He further urged former Presidents and Heads of State to set aside personal differences and work together with the current administration to avert the looming crisis.
“Our former Presidents and Heads of State are eminently positioned to engage the USA and President Trump in an all-out quiet diplomacy, outside the media realm, to resolve whatever concerns the U.S. may have,” he added.
