.. As it Hosts 2025 Humboldt Kolleg Scientific Conference

The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), Africa’s best University of Agriculture and ranked 7th globally, has once again demonstrated its leadership in agricultural research and innovation as it hosted the opening session of the 2025 Humboldt Kolleg Scientific Conference, which commenced today, September 22, 2025.
The 3-Day international conference, themed “AI-Driven Approach to Regenerative Agriculture for Sustainable Food Production, Food Safety, and Environmental Preservation,” convened top researchers, policymakers, and industry stakeholders to explore how Artificial Intelligence (AI) and regenerative practices can transform food systems, safeguard the environment, and drive Africa’s economic growth.
Declaring the conference open, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Babatunde Kehinde who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Olukayode Akinyemi, described the event as timely. He reaffirmed FUNAAB’s commitment to pioneering cutting-edge research and partnerships that integrate AI into agriculture to boost productivity, ensure food safety, and promote environmental preservation.
In a thought-provoking presentation, the University Librarian, Prof. Abayomi Owolabi, represented by Dr. Fauziyah Adenekan, underscored Africa’s critical role in shaping the future of AI in agriculture. He lamented that while world powers like the U.S. and China dominate AI investment, Africa receives only 0.3% despite its immense potential.
“AI is rewriting the rules of the global economy, and Africa risks marginalisation not for lack of talent, but because its role in shaping the future has been overlooked,” Prof. Owolabi stated, stressing Africa’s youthful labour force as a game-changer for innovation and food production.
Earlier, the Convener, Prof. Olufemi Ojo, warmly welcomed participants to FUNAAB, encouraging them to maximise the knowledge-sharing opportunities while experiencing the unique heritage of Abeokuta.
Prof. Ojo, also the University’s Desk Officer for the German Consulate in Nigeria appreciated the Vice-Chancellor for the support of the conference.
Delivering the Keynote Address, Prof. Jonathan Atungwu, Provost of the Federal College of Agriculture, Ibadan (FCAIB), urged governments and private investors to support farmers through regenerative agricultural systems, environmental stewardship training, and accessible credit facilities. He called for policies that guarantee food production and sustainability for future generations.
Also delivering a special paper, Prof. Simeon Cadmus of the University of Ibadan addressed the theme “Climate Change: Roles in Emerging and Re-emerging Diseases in Africa.” He warned of the growing risks climate change poses to human and animal health, stressing the need for proactive research and interventions.
The conference further featured panel discussions, Goodwill Messages, and networking sessions that reinforced cross-disciplinary collaboration, all underscoring the strategic role of AI-driven regenerative agriculture in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
By hosting this landmark conference, FUNAAB continues to cement its reputation as Africa’s agricultural think tank and a global trailblazer in innovative food security solutions.
