A protest broke out at the Federal Polytechnic in Bauchi State on Tuesday over insecurity.
The undergraduates were robbed around 2 am on Tuesday at the male hostel, with some students reportedly stabbed during the robbery.
Angered by the situation, the students trooped out to march against insecurity on the polytechnic campus.
The protest, which started around 5:30 am, disrupted academic and socio-economic activities on the campus as rampaging students mounted roadblocks and set up bonfires.
The school premises were engulfed with smoke billowing into the sky from bonfires lit in different spots.
The school authorities immediately called for reinforced security as men of the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies were drafted to the school premises to quell the unrest.
In a statement, the management of the polytechnic termed as “justifiable frustration” the anger of the protesting students, but condemned the violence that erupted from the demonstration.
The school authorities immediately ordered the closure of the campus till further notice.
“It has been established that hoodlums who do not mean the students and the institution well have taken over what was meant to be a peaceful protest.
“Against the background of this ugly situation, the management hereby orders the immediate closure of academic activities. By this order, students are given two hours within which to vacate the polytechnic campus until further notice,” it said.
