Two police detectives were shot dead in Florida, Johannesburg, South Africa, on Friday morning while transporting a suspect from court, police confirmed.
Police spokesperson Lt-Col Mavela Masondo said the incident occurred at about 10:30am. The officers, attached to the trio task team, had collected the suspect for an appearance at the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court in connection with a 2023 business robbery case.
“Our members went to fetch a suspect that was to appear in the Roodepoort magistrate’s court in a case of business robbery that occurred in 2023,” Masondo said.
He explained that after the court proceedings, the detectives were intercepted and fatally shot while returning the suspect to police custody. Their firearms were taken, and the suspect was later seen driving the unmarked police vehicle, which was found abandoned a few kilometres from the scene.
“We have launched a manhunt,” Masondo said.
