A coalition of aviation unions in Nigeria has declared an indefinite strike action beginning Monday, August 11, over the federal government’s failure to implement a long-promised salary structure for airspace management staff.
The strike directive affects all personnel of the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) and is expected to disrupt flight operations nationwide.
In a joint statement issued Thursday, the unions – including the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE), Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN), Association of Nigeria Aviation Professionals (ANAP), and the Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employees (AUPCTRE) – said the action follows an expired ultimatum given to the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo.
“As you are all aware, the notice of withdrawal of services given on 30th July expires at the end of today. Therefore, all workers of NAMA are hereby directed to stop all services with effect from Monday, 11th August 2025, at 05:00hrs indefinitely,” the statement read.
The unions said negotiations for the revised salary structure were concluded over eight months ago but implementation has stalled without explanation. They expressed frustration over the prolonged delay, warning that their patience has run out.
“All airlines, allied aviation service providers and the flying public are hereby advised to make alternative travel arrangements,” the unions added.
The strike notice has been formally sent to relevant authorities including the NAMA and FAAN managing directors, airport security heads, and airline operators.
