Delta State Police Command has arrested two suspected herbalists who allegedly provided spiritual fortification for a notorious kidnapping syndicate operating across the state and Edo.
This is following a coordinated operation led by the CP-Special Assignment Team (CP-SAT).
The arrests followed credible intelligence reports indicating an elaborate plot to abduct several high-profile individuals in Sapele, Oghara, and surrounding communities.
The operation, carried out in the early hours of July 19, 2025, marks a major breakthrough in the ongoing crackdown on organised criminal networks in the region.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, the team led by ASP Julius Robinson first apprehended 35-year-old Peter Benson, a native of Kwale in Ndokwa LGA, Delta State.
Benson is believed to be a spiritual herbalist responsible for preparing ritual protection for the criminal gang.
Following his arrest and subsequent interrogation, Benson led operatives to the residence of another suspected spiritualist, 63-year-old Joseph Saniyo, in Ajakorama Community, Ovia South-West LGA, Edo State.
Saniyo, identified as the chief spiritualist for the syndicate, was found in possession of three live tortoises and various fetish items believed to have been used in ritual practices intended to shield the gang from law enforcement agents.
Acting on additional intelligence, CP-SAT operatives swiftly moved to Oghara, where they arrested the alleged ringleader of the syndicate, 42-year-old Owei Abebo, popularly known as “Adusa.”
Two other male suspects — 41-year-old Ebi Maye from Poloborbor Community in Warri North LGA, and 39-year-old Happy Obegha from Aakoroma Community in Ovia North-East LGA — were also taken into custody.
A subsequent search of the suspects’ hideouts led to the recovery of 247 rounds of live ammunition intended for use in a submachine gun (SMG) rifle.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the group’s latest mission involved the planned, coordinated kidnapping of prominent individuals across Sapele and Oghara — a plot now successfully foiled by the Command.
The Delta State Police Command has reiterated its commitment to dismantling criminal syndicates and has urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.
Investigation is ongoing, and the suspects will be charged accordingly
