In what’s being called a case of intimate partner violence, police have arrested a 36-year-old Nigeria man, Lucky Ogbeijielele, for stabbing his mother-in-law to d3ath in Greater Sudbury, Canada.

The incident occurred on Tuesday morning, July 1, 2025.

A 32-year-old woman, believed to be the suspect’s wife, also received serious but not life-threatening injuries in the incident.

The Greater Sudbury Police in a statement said two children were found inside the residence, but had no physical injuries.

“Shortly after 12:35 a.m. this morning, July 2, 2025, officers were dispatched to an Intimate Partner Violence-related incident at a residence on Lorne Street,” the statement read.

“Information provided was that a community member and a family member had sustained serious injuries after a violent altercation with the community member’s partner.

 

“Officers arrived on scene and located a 32-year-old woman outside the residence who had sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries. She was transported to hospital by Greater Sudbury Paramedics.

 

“Officers made entry into the residence to check on the well-being of those who were believed to be inside.

“Officers located a 63-year-old woman who had sustained what are believed to be multiple stab wounds. Unfortunately, she was pronounced deceased on scene.

“Officers also located two children inside the residence who were not physically injured. Officers cleared the residence and did not locate anyone else inside. It is believed that the individual responsible for the attack fled prior to police arrival.

 

“The individual is described as a 36-year-old. Black man who is 5’7” tall with short black hair and a beard. He was last seen wearing light-coloured shorts and a dark-coloured shirt.

“It is believed that he sustained an injury to one of his legs during the altercation. Anyone with information related to the whereabouts of this individual is asked to contact police immediately.

 

“Officers remain on scene and will be canvassing the area for information and video surveillance footage. Officers have applied for and been granted a search warrant for the residence.

 

“Members of the K9 Unit will be conducting an evidentiary ground search in the area. In an updated statement, added that the suspect was arrested.

 

“Shortly before 11:30 a.m. officers located the 36-year-old man in a wooded area off Alder Street with injuries that appear to be self-inflicted. He was taken into custody without incident.

“Due to the nature of his injuries, he has been transported to the hospital for medical treatment, however he remains in police custody.

 

“The 36-year-old, man is being charged with the following offences under the Criminal Code of Canada: First Degree Murder, Attempted Murder, Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose, Forcible Confinement, Choking.

 

“As he requires medical treatment, it has not yet been determined when he will attend Bail Court to answer to the charges.”
