Nigerian Armed Forces has deployed 197 troops to the Economic Community of West African States Mission in The Gambia (ECOMIG) to support regional peace and stability.
The troops underwent rigorous Pre-Deployment Training (PDT) at the Martin Luther Agwai International Leadership and Peacekeeping Centre in Kaduna, equipping them with the necessary tactical skills and knowledge for peace support operations.
According to the Chief of Operations (Army), Maj-Gen. Uwem Bassey, the training was designed to prepare the troops for their mission in The Gambia.
“You are not only representatives of Nigeria but also ambassadors of peace for the entire West Africa,” Bassey said, emphasizing the importance of their role.
“Sexual exploitation and abuse have no place in our world. They violate everything that the United Nations stands for.”
The troops were reminded to maintain discipline, impartiality, and respect for human dignity while carrying out their mandate in The Gambia.
They were also trained on mission-specific topics, including Counter-Improvised Explosive Devices and financial management for peacekeepers.
The Commandant of the centre, Maj-Gen. Ademola Adedoja, highlighted the significance of conduct and discipline, stating, “Your conduct and professionalism in the mission area will define not only your personal reputation but also that of the Nigerian Armed Forces and the nation at large.”
The deployment of Nigerian troops to ECOMOG underscores the country’s commitment to regional peace and stability. As guardians of peace, they will work to protect lives, build trust, and restore dignity in The Gambia.
The Nigerian Army has a long history of contributing to international peacekeeping efforts, with Nigerian peacekeepers earning global recognition for their leadership, bravery, and professional competence.
The training curriculum was designed in line with UN Core Pre-Deployment Training Materials (CPTM) and included mission-specific training on topics such as occupation and security of base camps, convoy drills, and protection of VIPs. The troops received tactical training to equip them with the necessary skills to operate effectively in a peacekeeping environment.
The Commandant expressed appreciation to the Chief of Army Staff, Lt-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, for his support and strategic leadership.
He also thanked the Board of Trustees, sister training institutions, and facilitators/instructors for their contributions to the programme.
The deployment of the troops is a testament to Nigeria’s commitment to regional peace and stability, and the country’s role in promoting peace and security in West Africa.
