Ebonyi Airport is not working, Gov. Nwifuru laments

By Nabob Ogbonna, Abakiliki

The governor of Ebonyi state,  Francis Nwifuru on Tuesday asserted that the Chuba Okadigbo International Airport located at Onuke in Ezza South local government area of the state is not fit for flight operations.

Nwifuru gave this clarification on Tuesday during the official flag-off for the construction of the state Industrial city at Izhi in Ohaukwu local government area of the state.

His words: “for the airport we have a lot of projects still ongoing and they are the tower which is too small and the air fleet lighting.

“We are also working on the terminal, infact the whole roof in the terminal is leaking and we are going to remove all of them.

“Again, there are other things that are still ongoing and we are going to get it done before we can say we have an airport but for now, we don’t have one, “he stated.

The governor noted that the industrial city which would be an economic hub for the state would have hostel, power and water when completed.

Our Correspondent gathered that the project which would be chaired and supervised by the deputy governor, Mrs. Patricia Obila would be executed through direct labour.

It could be recalled that governor Nwifuru has sunked in over 19 billion naira in repairing the Ebonyi Airport’s runway.

But this notification Salient Times learnt came at a period when critics in some quarters have questioned of not listing the airport (Ebonyi) as next nearest choice of operation following the short closure of Enugu international airport over repairs.

The airport was built and commissioned during the time administration of Engr. David Umahi as governor, now minister for works. END//
