Federal University Of Medicine And Medical Sciences Abeokuta to Commence Academic Session by September
Barring any unforseen circumstances, the newly established Federal University of Medicine and Medical Sciences, Abeokuta ( FUMMSA) is to commence academic session in September this year.
The institution’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Fatiu Abiola Arogundade dropped this hints at a courtesy visit on the Management of Federal Medical Centre Idi-Aba Abeokuta by the University’s Governing Council led by its Chairman, Dr.Usman Muhammed Shanawa.
Temporarily, the university will commence its academic programmes at the premises of Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta ( FUNAAB) with Medicine, Nursing and some medical related courses.
A statement by the Spokesman for FMCA, Dr. Segun Orisajo quoted the Vice Chancellor as assuring that all necessary logistics were being put in place towards ensuring a seamless take-off .
” The university is going to take off in September, every other things being equal.
” We do not know what our carrying capacity will be, but definitely we’re going to start with Medicine, Nursing, Medical Rehabilitation and some others”
Continuing, Prof Arogundade said officials from the National Universities Commission (NUC) are being expected any moment from now for a verification exercise.
” There will be NUC verification visit, they will guide us on the number of students we can admit especially now that we have limited facilities.
” We are going to be using facilities provided to us by FUNAAB, definitely we did not expect that they will give us all their hostels or lecture rooms.
“In essence, whatever our carrying capacity will accommodate will determine the number of courses and students we are going to start with”
On whether admission of foundation students was going to be through JAMB, the vice chancellor sheds light on this.
” The next JAMB is coming up very soon, a matter of few weeks ahead.
” What I think will happen is that once we get accredited in the NUC’s verification, we expect that we’ll then be taking on by JAMB and candidates can then change to the university, through that arrangement, we shall be able to admit students.
” By next year, definitely we would have been in JAMB list for admission.
Speaking earlier, the Chairman of the Governing Council, Dr. Usman Shanawa commended the management of FMCA and most especially the Medical Director Professor, Adewale Musa- Olomu for his determination, doggedness and relentless efforts in ensuring the dream of bringing the university to existence finally came to pass.
” Prof Olomu has contributed a lot to this project , his hard work speaks for itself.”
As a mark of appreciation and recognition of the Medical Director’s contributions,the Chairman directed the university authorities to institute an award for him.
In addition, Dr. Shanawa advocated converting the Federal Medical Centre Idi-Aba Abeokuta to a Teaching Hospital, to serve the university rather than to start another teaching hospital stressing,” we all know how things are in the country economically”
On his part, Prof.Musa-Olomu, pledged his continued support for the university’s growth and development.
” I am ready to offer myself in any capacity the university will need my assistance. I’m available”
The Medical Director said it will be the joy of all stakeholders to see FUMMSA becoming a leading institution in medical education and research in Nigeria and globally.
He appealed to the Governing Council to request the federal government to upgrade the Federal Medical Centre Idi-Aba Abeokuta to a teaching hospital.
The visit was attended by the university’s principal officers including the Registrar, Dr. Abayomi Olukayode Gregory, Bursar Mrs Adedokun Omolola Olufunso, the Librarian Dr. Idiat Odunola, among others.
