One student has been confirmed dead while several others sustained varying degrees of injuries after a classroom block collapsed at Government Girls Science and Technical College in Potiskum, Yobe State,

The incident which occurred at 12 noon on Thursday, February 20, 2025, left students trapped under the rubble.

The SS1 students were said to be about to go for their lunch break before the collapse.

Emergency responders and school officials quickly swung into action, rushing the victims to the Specialist Hospital Potiskum for medical attention.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry for Basic and Secondary Education, Bukar Aji, while briefing journalists on the incident, said the injured students are receiving medication at Specialist Hospital in Potiskum.

He further explained that the State Ministry of Housing and Urban Development has been contacted to investigate the root cause of the incident and report back.

While sympathizing with the family of the deceased students, as well as the injured students, the Permanent Secretary assured them that the government would always be proactive in maintaining all its structures to forestall further occurrence.
