Arnoldo Jimenez, a fugitive on the FBI’s 10 Most Wanted list for over a decade, has been captured in Monterrey, Mexico. Jimenez had been on the run since May 2012, when he allegedly k!lled his wife, Estrella Carrera, on their wedding night in Illinois.
Carrera, 26, was found dead in the bathtub of her apartment in Burbank, Illinois, just two days after marrying Jimenez. Following the discovery, Jimenez was charged with first-degree murder, and warrants for his arrest were issued at the state and federal levels, the latter for unlawful flight to avoid prosecution.
The capture of Jimenez was a collaborative effort involving multiple agencies, including FBI Chicago, FBI San Antonio, FBI LEGAT Mexico City, and the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. Mexican authorities, working with the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol), apprehended Jimenez without incident.
Douglas S. DePodesta, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Chicago Field Office, praised the teamwork involved, stating, “The FBI will use all of its available resources to bring criminals to justice, no matter how much time has passed or where they may be in the world.”
Burbank Police Deputy Chief William Casey commended the professionalism of all parties, saying, “The apprehension of Arnoldo Jimenez was the result of tireless teamwork… bringing justice for Estrella Carrera and her family.”
Jimenez was the fourth-most wanted fugitive in the U.S. at the time of his arrest. He is currently in custody, awaiting extradition proceedings.
