The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) says the 36 states of the federation and the federal capital territory (FCT) recorded N2.43 trillion in internally generated revenue (IGR) in 2023.
In the latest report released on Monday, NBS said the IGR recorded in 2023, is higher by 26.5 percent to the N1.92 trillion IGR recorded in 2022.
IGR is from two major categories of revenues namely taxes and ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) revenue.
Giving further analysis, the bureau said Lagos, federal capital territory (FCT), and Rivers states topped with the highest IGR.
Lagos state had the highest IGR with N815.86 billion, representing 33.6 percent of the total IGR in 2023.
The revenue generated by Lagos was 25 percent higher than the N651.15 billion recorded in 2022.
Rivers followed with N195.41 billion, FCT recorded N211.10 billion, Delta state generated N90.91 billion; and Ogun recorded N146.87 billion.
On the other hand, Taraba state generated the least IGR (N10.86 billion) in 2023, followed by Yobe (N11.19 billion), Kebbi (N11.73 billion) and Gombe (N15.17 billion).
South-west Takes The Lead
According to NBS, the south-west zone recorded the highest revenue in 2023, totalling N1.1 trillion; followed by the south-south zone with N468.7 billion,
Further analysis of the report showed that Lagos state generated 73 percent of the entire IGR of the south-west.
The total revenue recorded from the south-east zone is N142.9 billion, north-west recorded N206.2 billion, and north-central generated N387.6 billion.
However, the north-east zone recorded the least IGR with N104.3 billion
