FUTA students protest over incessant robbery attacks
Students of the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA), Ondo state, on Friday, staged a protest over what they described as the incessant robbery attacks against them at their off-campus hostels.
The protesters chanted solidarity songs and barricaded the Akure-Ilesa road, causing gridlock on the expressway.
The protesting students carried placards with inscriptions such as: ‘Students’ lives matter’, and ‘Please save us from robbers, We no longer sleep’, among others.
The students expressed their displeasure and concern over the lack of security measures to protect them in their hostels.
Ajayi Simeon, one of the protesters, said the protest aims to call the attention of FUTA’s management, the government, and security agencies to take action to save them from the activities of the robbers.
Simeon said most times, students find it difficult to receive security interventions whenever robbery incidents take place.
Endurance Daudu, a motorist, also called on the government to provide security around the area to forestall such attacks against the students.
Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, the state police spokesperson, said security operatives had been deployed in the area to ensure the protest was not hijacked by hoodlums.
She assured that the command will also do everything possible to ensure that the students and their properties are protected.
